5 Wedding Cake Cost Considerations
1. When is your wedding?
This one is important because it may impact your cake choices based on the season and weather. For example, fondant is more expensive but it is a great option for hot and humid weather. On the other hand buttercream is cheaper but it won’t last in the heat.
2. How many guests will attend the wedding?
Some bakers charge by the slice so it is important to have an understanding of how many guests you are expecting to have. Additionally, it is good to share with your baker if the cake will be the only dessert at the wedding, and if you want to save the top layer. Generally speaking it is recommended to have a slice for 75% of the total number of guests.
3. Will adding “X” increase the cost?
This is an important question to ask your baker as you brainstorm what you want on the cake. For example, some bakers charge for having more than one flavor, so it is important to be aware of how your choices impact your cake budget. I would also recommend for the baker’s contract to include an itemized list of all your selections, this will make it easier for you to remove certain items if needed to stay on budget.
4. Where is the venue?
Make sure to know if your baker charges extra for delivery and setup. Some bakers might have a standard delivery fee and some might charge by the mile. If they charge by the mile, having a baker within the venue’s radius will help reduce cost.
5. Does your venue charge a fee if you do not use their baker?
Your venue’s rules might add more costs to your budget than expected. Some venues require you to use their own baker, and some others allow you to bring your own cake but might charge a cake cutting fee. Whatever the case may be, do the math to see what is more cost-friendly.
